_One of the things that most beginners to the System are shocked about is the prescriptive nature of how Nei Jia is taught within the School. By prescriptive I mean that movement must be done in a particular way. it's prescriptive because you can't break the fundamental principles of the System as these principles are universal to all martial arts. Either you’re doing it or you’re not. Notice that I said how movement is done. So, it’s not what you do but how you do it that’s important. In other words, it’s the efficiency of movement that we’re interested in. With the Nei Jia taught at the School breath, intention and the body are trained to be integrated in a particular, unique way. This means that what may be seemingly trivial in other systems are important in ours. Mastery is an understanding of the basics. Total up all those little, 'trivial' things and you’ll find out that these build up into something rather large.
The real genius of the System is that it’s based upon actively using key principles to examine and feel how movement is undertaken. All of the infinite number of problems you might have: alignment, body weight transference, consistent performance etc, are all taken care of in a few ‘rules’. It’s the application of these rules where all the practice and training comes in.
This means that, with the support of your instructor, you can ultimately teach yourself and the teaching/learning methodology does not ‘steal your discoveries’. This also gives you the ability to analyse systematically other movement based activities, whether it be ballet or golf or rock climbing. I’m not talking about cross-training here but rather being able to gain greater physical and mental insight into your own sport/performance endeavours. If you want to know how to deliver more lift into an assemblé, how to use the working foot as it slides along the ground – you can use Nei Jia. Greater understanding of how your legs root and stabilise your body will increase the performance of your golf swing. Better awareness of your centre of gravity/mass will deliver increased fluidity over the rock.
